1. Yolk – 3, Pengkalan Weld, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
This cafe is very trendy with high, lofty ceilings and fans spinning away to keep you cool throughout your dining experience. Staff are very friendly and there’s also two bars. It could very easily be a live music venue.
They claim that they only serve mouthwatering dishes and based on my experience this is very true! It’s always a great sign when you have to make a choice between which dishes you want to eat. I chose the bestselling rustic baked eggs along with a sunrise refresher (a juice with apple, mango and carrot), a flat white and chocolate lava cookie for dessert. Yolk Penang gets a yes from me and I would definitely return and recommend to a friend. The view overlooking the harbour is also pleasant.
2. Jetty Food Court – 49-F, Pengkalan Weld, George Town, 10300 Georgetown, Malaysia.
This food court has live performances from 9:30pm nightly and a wide selection of different dishes from all over Asia along with some western options as well. I opted for the yellow noodles which were delicious, especially with the sauce it was cooked in! Not only is the food tasty, but it’s also in a great location close to many central attractions. The customers were a mix of locals and tourists.
3. Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café – 11, Pesara Claimant, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
Located in the centre of Georgetown and with two locations, this is a great stop before a day of sightseeing. There is a calm vibe here and plenty of dishes to choose from. I loved the breakfast parfait (overnight oats, tropical fruits, Yin’s jam, granola and milk kefir) and the French toast (caramelized apple & banana, almond flakes, vanilla sauce, pomegranate and sourdough brioche) in particular. Their fantastic mango kefir was refreshing in the hot weather and their flat white is also worth trying. They have plenty of bread and pastries which you can buy to take away as well if you like. Check out their Instagram page here.
4. Café Mangga – 14, Lebuh Leith, George Town, 10200 George Town, Pulau Pinang.
This is a great spot just outside the Blue Mansion if you are looking for a cold drink and a place to sit down, especially after a tour. There are plenty of cakes on offer if you have a sweet tooth as well. There’s more information available on their site here.
5. JJ Garden Food Court – Jalan Sungai Kelian, 11200 Tanjung Bungah, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
This is another popular food court in Penang which is great value for money. It has a vast range of different cuisines from Malaysia and beyond. I tried the char kuey teow and a very peculiar dessert which had a little bit of everything and was definitely an acquired taste. When I visited, there appeared to be a free flow of locals and tourists passing through.
