Although my trip to Meteora was short and sweet (read all about it here), the Greek hospitality was still top tier. How I ended up at Meteora Central Hostel was purely by accident but it was most likely a blessing in disguise. I had booked another place to stay, only to realise upon arrival that I had booked it for the next day. Unfortunately, they had no bookings and this resulted in a quick scramble to see what was on Booking.com and Hostelworld.

What resulted was finding a hostel dorm at Meteora Central Hostel. In this blog post, I’ll share about the location and how to get to the monasteries of Meteora from there. Not only that, but I’ll also share about the facilities and the hospitality shown by George. He’s the owner of Meteora Central Hostel.
The Location
Meteora Central Hostel is located at Trikalon 86, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece. For clarity, Kalampaka is the town next ti Meteora. It has a very central location close to bars, shops and restaurants. In addition, it’s not too far from the bus station (about 10 minutes walking maximum). Also, it’s on the same street as the public bus which will take you to the monasteries of Meteora. This is located just outside of a bakery. More information on that is available here.
Checking In
You can check in from 1:30pm and check out is until 10:30am. When I checked in, it was late at night and I had arrived on the last bus. There is a cafe/bar next door where you can check in. This is where I met George and his wife. Both are a wealth of information and will set you up for a successful trip to Meteora. George then gave me a tour of the property so that I became well acquainted with my surroundings quickly.
The Facilities
Meteora Central Hostel is well equipped if you’re planning a quick visit. They have a kitchen where you can store your items in a fridge and cook on a stove if you like. There is also some seating available inside and outside. I’ll be honest, it was crowded when I went and late at night so I didn’t take a photo.
I stayed in one of their bigger dorm rooms. I have stayed in plenty during my time travelling but this one is definitely on the higher end in terms of quality. It had a light, a plug, storage space (bring a lock) and a curtain for privacy. That said, the guests were also respectful of one another and didn’t make too much noise. They also have a rule that shoes are to be kept outside of the room which is very helpful.
There are three communal bathrooms located on the landing if you need to take a shower and clean yourself up. The water was fine (both hot and cold) I didn’t have any issue in terms of waiting. However, I do think that this might be something to think about if you’re planning to make a particular bus in the morning and you’re in a rush.
Although I didn’t have time, there is a very small balcony overlooking the Main Street where you could sit outside if you want to do a bit of people watching. There is also wifi available on site and it worked perfectly. The network and password is on the sign next to your bed in the dormitory.
The Hospitality
I cannot stress the quality of the hospitality from this hostel. George and his wife were extremely hospitable from the moment that I arrived. They called the bus station to check times for me. In addition, they made sure that I was on a bus to Meteora in the morning. During breakfast, they chatted to me about where to go in Meteora, and told me what time I needed to start coming back down in order to make sure I made my bus back to Athens.
In fact, George even drove me to the bus station to ensure I made my bus! I cannot think of many hostels that do all of this. I would highly recommend a visit to Meteora Central Hostel. You can make a booking here. Also, you can check them out on Instagram and Facebook.
