If you’re planning to visit Palau and you’re looking for something to do besides diving, a trip to Belau Eco Glass might be something worth considering. Located close to the centre of downtown Koror, tours or Belau Eco Glass are available for $65 USD. In the past, they would have taken larger tour groups, but Palau is still recovering post-Covid. As a result, I was able to do an individual tour. Keep reading if you’d like to find out more about what to expect if you plan on visiting Belau Eco Glass.
Making a Booking
Bookings need to be made in advance. Upon arrival, you’ll get a tour of the factory. Furthermore, you will create your own glass. Your guide will show you the different colours and shapes of glasses you can choose. They use a lot of used beer bottles to make the different glass ornaments and drinking glasses.
Gift Shop and Gallery
I was also shown their gallery where they have a plethora of different glass ornaments on display. Jellyfish are their most popular glass ornament available to buy. However, there are plenty of other designs to buy if you’d like something else.
Glassblowing
The staff are very friendly and will guide you through the entire glassblowing process from the moment the glass is removed from the furnace. The colours you choose will be added and you’ll get the opportunity to take part in the glassblowing and rolling. I’ll be perfectly honest, there is no way I could have done this myself!
Be Careful!
Mind your hands when handling the poker, it’s very hot! I learned the hard way as I placed my hand very closer to the hot part. That said, the staff were on hand immediately (despite me saying, ‘Really, I’m fine!’ (I wasn’t) with first aid and provided me with ointment to apply. My burn was healed within just over one day.
Glass Collection
Allow yourself 24 hours after the visit to collect your glass. I chose the Palau colours to ensure that I had a souvenir of my time in Palau. At the time, I felt that the price was a bit steep for the whole experience. Now on the other hand, I’m grateful that I have a practical little piece of Palau to keep.
