Green Day came to play at Marlay Park and it just so happened to be on the same day that I was in Dublin for a day. So I took it as a sign to relive my teenage years and went to their concert. Keep reading to find out more about what it was like to go see Green Day at Marlay Park in Dublin, Ireland.

Drama on Arrival in Dublin
First of all, arrival was challenging from China. My flight landed at 7am and neither my Irish nor Chinese bank cards worked. The only reason I could get on the bus was I had €10 in my wallet from a previous trip. When I got downtown, none of the ATMs worked and my bank wasn’t open so I could go in to withdraw money. Eventually the Centra on Dame St accepted my card.
Getting to Marlay Park cost €2.60 and I got the bus to Llewelyn Park. Bus timetables are available here but may not be available in your region if you’re not in Ireland. Once I arrived there, I could walk to the venue. Also, if you’re not from Ireland, make sure that you have the exact change. If you don’t and you put in more money than needed, you need to go to the Dublin Bus office to get your change.
I tried to purchase my ticket online, but Ticketmaster wouldn’t accept that I had a Chinese number and their in person outlets are now closed. I was able to buy a ticket at the venue and luckily my card worked. They wouldn’t accept cash and any time I tried to use a card machine felt like Russian roulette.
A ticket for the golden circle was €99 and €89 for a regular standing ticket. The golden circle got me much closer to the front. As expected, food was expensive. I paid approximately €17 for this meal deal. I don’t drink so I knew that this was going to be all my spending for the gig.
The crowd was mainly an older group in their 30s/40s/50s but a few younger concert-goers (including a few kids!). It was very civilized and they played all the hits from their two albums Dookie and American Idiot. It was a great show and they kept the energy throughout the whole show. There were plenty of airborne drumsticks as well!
True Signs of Getting Old
I had a true sign that I was getting older by the pains in my back by the end of the night. It was a bit of a trek back to get a bus but I was able to get the 15B into Dublin City Centre for about €2.60 as well. I was able to top up my Leap Card (get one in Dublin for sure) at a Circle K on the way back towards the city. The buses in Dublin have wifi that works well.
Finally, the only downside of the night was 2/3 people fighting as they left Marlay Park but it was tame in comparison to most. The police were nearby to intervene. I made it back downtown just before midnight. One of the cheapest (in case you didn’t already know, Dublin and Ireland are ridiculously expensive!) places to stay in Dublin is right here.
