Check-In and Location
Located slightly east of the centre of Singapore, Village Hotel Katong is a short bus journey if you’re coming from downtown. When I visited, it took me about 30-40 minutes in total. Roxy Square is the closest bus stop but there are several nearby.
Checking in was very straightforward. I was asked to provide my passport and pay upfront. I was given a receipt, etc. without any issue. The reception staff were very friendly as well. They’re also happy to call taxis, etc. and assist you to the best of their ability at all times.
What I found interesting is that the hotel is joined onto a shopping mall with multiple shops which I found very convenient. One concern that I had was that some of the elevators would go directly into the shopping mall without passing reception, etc. However, on the way back up, I saw that you only had access to hotel room floors by using your room card.
The Room at Village Hotel Katong
I booked a double bed which ended up being extremely spacious with a nice balcony outside which overlooked other buildings in Katong. If you are lucky enough, you might get a room overlooking the water. I booked a club room and it was extremely spacious with a large double bed.
In addition, the bedroom had tea and coffee making facilities which were topped up daily. Even though the room was large, it was air-conditioned and plenty of natural light. Furthermore, it had a lounge and a space to do work if you needed it. This worked out perfectly for me as I had a lot to get done! Their wifi worked perfectly as well. The bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed uninterrupted sleep each night.
The bathroom was the right size for an adult and impeccably cleaned. There was a walk-in shower which had both hot and cold water. One thing that really stood out to me at this hotel was how they had a sustainability focus. There wasn’t an overload of toiletries and bottled water, etc. Below are some signs which were in the bathroom to get you thinking about sustainable hospitality.
Facilities
The Village Hotel Katong has a large restaurant where I ate breakfast every morning. There was a wide range of food available (eastern and western options). In all honesty, it wasn’t the most amazing breakfast in the world, but it wasn’t awful either. The fact that I ate there daily means that it was fine. It was also already included in the price, but it was fine! There were plenty of drink options as well. I was downstairs at around 7am but I was told that it can get very busy towards the end of the breakfast shift. You can definitely fill yourself if you want to.
Another major attraction at Village Hotel Katong is the pool area. It is very much a pool to get in and chill out as opposed to swimming lengths (the fact that it’s round is a bit of a giveaway as well). There were a few families around when I was there, but there was still space to swim around a bit. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of the gym area which is located nearby but it was a little bit outdated when I went. I do think that this is an area of development not only for this hotel, but for most hotels in general.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I would recommend this hotel if I was staying in Singapore for a couple of days. I think if you’re looking for a place a little calmer than the hustle and bustle of the centre, it’s ideal. It would also suit families with kids as there is space to move around as well. I think if you’re looking to be close to the main tourist attractions, then somewhere more central is probably a better option.
